South African Gold Coins

Many people's first gold coin is the South African Krugerrand, but this is not the only coin from South Africa. The first Krugerrand was minted in 1967 and have had a legal tender status since that time.

The 1 ounce Krugerrand is a 22K carat gold coin but it contains one troy ounce of gold with a total weight of 1.0909 ounces of metal. Because the remaining metal is copper, the Krugerrand has a slightly orange tint rather than the common gold tint that gold and silver alloyed coins have.

The Krugerrand is named after Paul Kruger, former President of the South African Republic. His face appears on the Kruggerand gold coin. The opposite side shows a springbok antelope. The Krugerrand is available in 4 different weights.
